Tank Cleaning

Here we were asked to completely wash, clean and dry a 12,500 gallon tank that contained Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF). The tank was located inside the building and was 18 feet tall. There was only 8 feet of clearance above the tank and the opening was less than 20 inches. There was no ladder inside the tank. We just completed this project a few weeks ago and it was our first time cleaning this material.

Before the employee enters the tank, entry permits are made out and placed in plain sight for everyone to see. The employee is properly suited up for the job. Here we were contracted to wash and clean a 12,500 gallon tank that contained Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF). This material has a strong ammonia odor and can cause irritation to bare skin.

Here the employee has safely entered the tank. He has successfully washed all the interior surfaces and is completing the clean up of all the material and wash water on the bottom. He is carefully monitored the entire time by the safety man on the outside of the tank.

Here the employee makes a final check of his equipment needed to do the cleaning. He will then connect his safety line and put on a full face respirator to protect himself from the odor and any splash from the DEF (diesel exhaust fluid). Cartridges for the face mask are carefully selected for each condition.

Here the employee has safely exited the tank. All material and wash water has been removed. He has reattached the inlet and outlet fittings so the tank can be put back into service. The customer makes a final inspection before the lid is placed back on the tank.
